Deepika Sehrawat Creates Asian Games History With 8-Goal Hockey Masterclass

India made a spectacular start to their 2026 Asian Games women’s hockey campaign, thrashing Uzbekistan 19-0 in their opening Pool B match on September 20. The highlight of the emphatic victory was a record-breaking performance from Deepika Sehrawat, who scored eight goals.

Deepika’s eight-goal haul is being reported as the highest individual goal tally in a single women’s hockey match in Asian Games history. She found the net in the 8th, 22nd, 25th, 33rd, 36th, 38th, 41st and 54th minutes. Six of her goals came from penalty corners, underlining India’s effectiveness from set pieces.

The Indian attack produced goals from several players. Ishika scored a hat-trick, while Navneet Kaur and Lalthantluangi contributed two goals each. Lalremsiami, Baljeet Kaur, Neha Goyal and Sakshi Rana were also on the scoresheet.

The 19-0 victory was particularly significant in the context of India’s Asian Games record. It is the third-largest winning margin recorded by the Indian women’s hockey team at the Asian Games. India’s biggest victories came against Hong Kong, whom they defeated 22-0 in 1982, and Kazakhstan, whom they beat 21-0 in 2018.

For Deepika, however, the opening match will be remembered for her extraordinary finishing. Scoring eight times in a single international match is difficult enough, but doing so in an Asian Games opener has immediately placed her performance among the tournament’s notable individual achievements.

At the same time, India will need to treat the result as the beginning rather than the conclusion of their campaign. Uzbekistan offered limited resistance, while tougher opponents are likely to test India’s defensive organisation, penalty-corner execution and ability to maintain attacking pressure.

India is scheduled to face Indonesia on September 21 in their next Pool B match.

The 19-0 scoreline has certainly provided India with momentum, but the biggest talking point from the opener is Deepika Sehrawat’s historic eight-goal performance. For Indian women’s hockey, the Asian Games campaign has begun with an emphatic statement on the scoreboard.
