Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. shares gained more than 6% after the company announced that it had received a patent in Japan for a compound named 5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthalenedione, intended for use in cancer treatment.
According to the company, the patent is titled “5-HYDROXY-1,4-NAPHTHALENEDIONE FOR USE IN THE TREATMENT OF CANCER.” The patent was registered by the Japan Patent Office on May 26, 2026, under patent number 7869786. The patent application was originally filed on October 26, 2021.
Patent Covers Use of Compound in Cancer Treatment
Godavari Biorefineries stated that the patented compound has shown inhibitory effects on cancer cells and cancer stem cells in research studies. The company said the compound demonstrated activity against multiple cancer types, including breast and prostate cancer.
However, the company has not disclosed details regarding clinical trials, regulatory approvals, or commercialization plans related to the compound. As a result, the patent grant should not be interpreted as approval for medical use or as evidence of clinical efficacy in patients.

Following the announcement, shares of Godavari Biorefineries rose more than 6% during trading. Investors appeared to react positively to the patent grant, which expands the company's intellectual property portfolio.
