HAL Shares Jump 3% As GE Aerospace Ships 3 F404 Engines For Tejas Mk-1A

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) shares jumped nearly 3% in Friday’s trading session after GE Aerospace announced the shipment of three F404-IN20 engines for India’s Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk-1A.
The development is being closely watched as the engine supply is critical to HAL’s ability to deliver Tejas fighter jets to the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The latest shipment signals some easing in the supply chain after delays in the delivery of GE Aerospace’s F404 engines had affected the production and delivery schedule of Tejas Mk-1A aircraft.

GE Aerospace Ships Three F404-IN20 Engines To HAL

GE Aerospace said it shipped three F404-IN20 engines to HAL in August. The company said it remains proud to partner with HAL and the Indian Air Force in powering India’s indigenous fighter aircraft.

The three engines form part of GE Aerospace’s larger commitment to supply 99 F404-IN20 engines to HAL for the Tejas Mk-1A programme.

However, HAL said the three engines have not yet arrived at its Bengaluru facility. According to a HAL spokesperson, two engines are expected to arrive next week, while the third is expected to arrive later.

HAL has so far received 10 engines, while the company expects to receive 22 engines by December, as per its current plan.

Engine Supply Remains Critical For HAL

The availability of F404-IN20 engines is an important factor in HAL’s production and delivery of the Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft.

The indigenous fighter is powered by the GE Aerospace F404 engine, making timely engine deliveries essential for HAL to maintain its aircraft production schedule and meet its commitments to the Indian Air Force.

The latest shipment of three engines could therefore provide some relief to the supply chain, although the engines still need to reach HAL’s Bengaluru facility before they can be integrated into the aircraft production process.
