Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal’s upcoming visit to the United States from September 29 to October 5 comes at an important moment for India’s global trade strategy. Goyal will participate in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee on September 30 and October 1, while also holding discussions with American businesses, investors and startups.
The G20 meeting provides India with an opportunity to push for a rules-based, open and transparent multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core. For developing economies, the emphasis on adequate policy space remains particularly relevant as global trade faces uncertainty and changing supply-chain patterns.
The India-US trade relationship will be another major focus of Goyal’s visit. Bilateral discussions are expected to address efforts towards an interim trade deal as part of the broader India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement negotiations. Earlier discussions have covered market access, digital trade, supply-chain resilience and non-tariff barriers.
What makes the visit significant is its strong business component. Goyal is scheduled to meet American companies across manufacturing, technology, consumer goods, retail and agribusiness in Milwaukee and Chicago, while also engaging with startups and innovative businesses.
