The Kanpur murder case involving medicine trader Vineet Minocha has taken a dramatic turn after police reportedly cleared his daughter-in-law Shalu of involvement and identified his son Subrat Minocha as the alleged mastermind. The development, coming 16 days after Shalu’s arrest, has raised important questions about the investigation, the verification of evidence and the risks of forming conclusions too early in a criminal case.
Shalu was arrested within 72 hours of Vineet’s September 5 murder after shooter Vishal allegedly named her as the person who had ordered the killing. Police also cited phone records and the fact that Shalu had authorized entry into the house. She was subsequently sent to jail. However, investigators later traced a newly acquired SIM card allegedly used by Vishal to communicate with Subrat. The investigation reportedly also examined CCTV activity, financial difficulties and the relationship between the father and son.
