Mirabai Chanu Makes History at Asian Games 2026 With Maiden Silver

Mirabai Chanu finally has her Asian Games medal! The Indian weightlifting star wins silver in the women’s 49kg category at #AsianGames2026, marking her maiden medal at the continental Games. A hard-earned podium finish after years of setbacks and perseverance.

Mirabai Chanu’s silver medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting category at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya is more than another addition to India’s medal tally. It is the culmination of a long wait for an athlete who had already established herself on the Olympic, World Championship and Commonwealth Games stages. On Wednesday, Chanu lifted a total of 198kg — 87kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk — to finally secure her maiden Asian Games medal.

The significance of this achievement becomes clearer when viewed against her Asian Games journey. Chanu finished ninth at the 2014 Incheon Games, missed the 2018 edition because of injury and came agonisingly close to the podium at Hangzhou 2023, where she finished fourth after an injury affected her final clean-and-jerk attempt. Her 2026 silver therefore represents not just consistency, but the ability to return after setbacks and remain competitive at the highest level.

There is also a larger Indian weightlifting story behind this medal. India had been waiting since Karnam Malleswari’s silver at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games for another weightlifting medal at the continental event. Chanu’s achievement has consequently ended a 28-year medal wait for Indian weightlifting at the Asian Games.

Yet the silver should not be viewed merely through the colour of the medal. Chanu competed in a demanding 49kg field and finished behind North Korea’s Ri Song Gum, while Indonesia’s Luluk Diana Tri Wijayana took bronze. The result underlines how competitive Asian weightlifting remains and how much Indian athletes still have to battle for every podium finish.

For Indian sport, Mirabai Chanu’s Asian Games silver offers a valuable reminder: progress is not always measured by gold. Sometimes it is measured by overcoming injury, disappointment and years of waiting to finally stand on a podium that once remained just out of reach.

Chanu has now completed another important chapter in an already remarkable international career. More importantly, her achievement gives Indian weightlifting a fresh moment of visibility at a continental level where sustained success has been difficult to achieve.
