New Delhi, September 21: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will lead the Indian delegation during the High-Level Week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, with his address to the General Assembly scheduled for September 26, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
Jaishankar’s visit comes as world leaders gather in New York for the annual UNGA High-Level Week. According to the United Nations, the general debate will take place from September 22 to 28, with the 81st session being held under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
The MEA said Jaishankar will also participate in a series of bilateral and plurilateral meetings during his visit. His schedule comes amid a wide-ranging international agenda at this year’s UNGA, including discussions on global peace and security, climate action, sustainable development and emerging challenges.
The 81st UNGA High-Level Week is bringing nearly 130 heads of state and government to New York, according to the United Nations. The General Debate provides countries with a platform to outline their priorities and positions on major international issues.
Jaishankar’s September 26 address will therefore be a key part of India’s participation in the high-level session. Recent reports have also highlighted the wider diplomatic significance of his New York visit, including potential engagements with international counterparts. However, the MEA’s official announcement specifically confirms his leadership of the Indian delegation, his September 26 address and participation in bilateral and plurilateral meetings.
The UNGA High-Level Week is taking place against the backdrop of conflicts and other global challenges, with the 2026 agenda also featuring high-level meetings on climate action, sea-level rise and pandemic preparedness.
