September Bank Strike: Centre Advances Salaries for Government Employees

A 3-day bank strike is scheduled for September 28-30. Banks will open on Sunday, September 27, to help customers complete essential transactions. Customers are advised to plan branch-dependent banking work early and use digital services where possible.

The proposed three-day bank strike from September 28 to 30, 2026 is likely to create challenges for customers, particularly because it follows the weekend holidays on September 26 and 27. To reduce the impact, the government has directed Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks to remain open on Sunday, September 27. The Reserve Bank of India has also approved the operation of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests that day.

From a customer perspective, the most important message is preparation. People with pending cheque-related work, cash requirements, account services or other branch-dependent transactions should avoid waiting until the last moment. Banks have also advised customers to make greater use of UPI, internet banking, mobile banking and ATMs during the possible disruption.

The Centre has separately decided to advance the payment of September salaries, wages and pensions for central government employees to September 25. The move is intended to prevent delays caused by the proposed strike. However, this payment is classified as an advance and any necessary adjustment will be made in the October 2026 salary or wage payment.

The timing is particularly significant because September 30 is also the banking sector's half-yearly closing date, when reconciliation and other financial processes take place. A prolonged disruption could therefore create additional pressure on banking operations.

The proposed strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), with five-day banking among its key demands, alongside other issues concerning employees and pensioners. The government and bank managements have urged unions to defer the strike and continue discussions.
