UP Rajya Sabha Polls on October 16 | BJP Moves Closer to Ticket Announcement

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate selection for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections is set to become an important organisational exercise ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls. The BJP’s Uttar Pradesh core group is expected to prepare its panel of names after September 25, before the list is sent to the central leadership for final approval.

The Election Commission has scheduled polling for 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh on October 16. Eight of the seats currently belong to the BJP, while the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party hold one each. The BJP and its allies have the numbers to target eight seats, while the SP is positioned to secure two, according to current Assembly arithmetic.

The BSP’s position is particularly significant. Its Rajya Sabha representation could end with the expiry of Ramji Lal Gautam’s term, unless the party secures support in the new electoral arithmetic. This makes the nomination process relevant not just for individual candidates but also for the composition of Uttar Pradesh’s representation in the Upper House.

The second contest involves 11 Legislative Council seats from teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies, with polling scheduled for October 23. Five graduates’ and six teachers’ constituencies will vote, with counting on October 27.

What makes the BJP’s candidate selection particularly noteworthy is the different nature of these two elections. Rajya Sabha candidates are elected by MLAs, whereas the MLC contests involve separate electorates of registered graduates and teachers. Consequently, candidate selection involves different electoral considerations.

The formal process begins with notification on September 29, while October 6 is the deadline for nominations in both elections.

For the BJP, the coming weeks will therefore be about more than announcing names. They will reveal how the party balances organisational considerations, electoral arithmetic and representation across two different upper-house contests, while political parties prepare for the larger 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
