‘Village for Sale’: Maharashtra’s Water Crisis Raises Serious Rural Question

The striking “Village for Sale, Price: Water” banner put up by residents of Tulshi in Maharashtra’s Solapur district is more than a protest slogan. It reflects how prolonged water scarcity can gradually threaten the economic and social fabric of a rural community.

Tulshi, home to around 7,000 people, has reportedly depended heavily on water tankers after local ponds and wells dried up. Residents say incomplete work under the Sina-Madha Lift Irrigation Scheme has prevented the village from receiving the water it needs, despite canals passing close to the settlement. Around 800 metres of excavation near two outlets has reportedly remained incomplete for decades.

The situation has become more serious because farming and animal husbandry are major sources of livelihood. A water crisis in such a village is therefore not simply a drinking-water problem. It affects agriculture, livestock, household finances and the willingness of younger people to remain in rural areas.

Villagers have staged a hunger strike and other protests, seeking a permanent solution rather than continued dependence on tankers. The reported sanction of Rs 90 lakh for a closed pipeline during 2025-26 indicates that efforts have been discussed, but residents say implementation has not provided the expected relief.

The wider Maharashtra situation also underlines the urgency. The state has faced significant rainfall deficits in drought-prone regions such as Marathwada and Vidarbha, highlighting the vulnerability of rural communities to uneven rainfall.

Tulshi’s “village for sale” message should therefore be viewed as a warning about the consequences of prolonged delays in water infrastructure. Government announcements can provide temporary reassurance, but villages ultimately need functioning pipelines, completed irrigation projects, reliable local water sources and timely maintenance.
