India’s First AC Double-Decker Train to Be Scrapped

Eastern Railway has decided to scrap the historic rake of the Howrah–Dhanbad AC Double-Decker Superfast, bringing an end to its 15-year journey.

Introduced in 2010, the train faced structural and operational challenges, including platform clearance issues and low passenger occupancy. Despite modifications and revival attempts, patronage remained poor, and the rake has remained idle for years near Howrah. The decision has sparked disappointment among railway enthusiasts, with many recalling the train’s unique experience and relatively affordable AC fare. There is reportedly no proposal to revive the service, and the rake will now be sent to the scrapyard.
